BALACLAVA SEWING CIRCLE
Balaclava Sewing Circles are a community crafting workshop and gentle act of resistance, where we gather to sew, embellish, and transform balaclavas using repurposed materials. Part soft-sculpture, part social space, the circle invites participants to create vibrant, camp, joyful balaclavas—sequined, beaded, painted, stitched, and entirely their own.
While we make, we talk. The workshop opens space for conversations about visibility and invisibility, safety, identity, and the structures that shape who is seen and protected in contemporary Australia. Grounded in creativity and collective care, the Balaclava Sewing Circles are first and foremost about friendship.
All materials are provided, and no sewing experience is needed—just curiosity, care, and a willingness to make something together.
Activities include:
• Welcome, Acknowledgement of Country, and safety briefing
• Demonstration of sewing and embellishment techniques
• Guided creation of balaclavas
• Optional discussions on relevant themes
• Individual creative support
• Optional sharing of completed pieces
All required materials are supplied, including textile bases, thread, needles, scissors, decorative materials, and protective coverings.
CONTENT WARNING
This workshop includes discussions that may be emotionally challenging for some participants. Topics may involve reflections on traumatic or difficult experiences, including the ongoing impacts of racism, sexism, and gendered violence. While all sensitivity and care will be undertaken in the facilitation of these conversations, the Balaclava Sewing Circle is not suitable for children. Participation is recommended for people aged 16 years and over.
The Balaclava Sewing Circle is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and accessible environment.
